Events & Announcements
IDEA Public Schools is proud to announce that, in addition to 100 percent of seniors in the Class of 2017 gaining admission to college, nearly 100 percent of these students matriculated to college. IDEA granted two exceptions, supporting students who entered the military, and one student will matriculate in the spring. In total, 100 percent of graduates from the Class of 2017 gained admission to a 4-year college, with nearly 50 percent of students getting into the country’s top colleges.
We are also excited to share that 450 graduates from the Class of 2017 are first-generation college students. This class also received more than $20 million in scholarships and grants, and more than 500 acceptances to selective and highly selective colleges. Congratulations to our graduating class of 2017!
Since our first graduating class 11 years ago, IDEA has achieved a 100% college acceptance rate.
“Hitting nearly 100 percent college matriculation for the eleventh year in a row is a huge accomplishment for IDEA Public Schools and one that multiple people across the organization work hard to achieve every year,” said JoAnn Gama, IDEA Public Schools co-founder, president and superintendent. “This achievement could not have been possible without the dedication of our faculty, staff, families, and students. We take pride in ensuring 100 percent of our students get accepted to college and work through the summer to ensure they matriculate in the fall.”
IDEA strives to ensure all graduates find success in college and in life. We do this through a talented staff, innovative programs, and a college-going culture.
Directors of College Counseling and College Counselors Spotlight
IDEA Directors of College Counseling and College Counselors go above and beyond for the IDEA student. Here is a snapshot of how they help every IDEA scholar throughout their college preparatory career:
· Our college counselors work with students starting in the 6th grade.
· Our counselors believe that all students can get to and through college.
· Our counselors provide hands-on support during in the college application cycle.
· Our counselors have a focus on the best colleges and the right colleges for every student.
· Our counselors go the extra mile.
· Our counselors work with students even after they have left IDEA, ensuring they transition successfully into college and stay enrolled.
Take Yvette Guzman, Director of College Counseling (DCC) at IDEA Weslaco Pike College Preparatory and former DCC at IDEA Quest College Preparatory. Yvette is elated for her students who matriculate into Tier 1 universities, with both admission and scholarship in hand. But she is just as happy, if not more so, for her students who struggled and persisted through academic challenges, and succeeded in admission to a college of their choice. “I just love working with kids and seeing their journey, being part of that journey and being able to own some of it,” says Yvette.
One of Yvette’s students and now an IDEA 2017 graduate, Devhani Abrego, still cherishes her relationship with her favorite counselor: “Mrs. Guzman was always there to help me and to encourage me,” she said. “I was in a traditional public school until 5th grade, and there they never mentioned college or what I wanted to do after college. Mrs. Guzman’s focus was on getting me prepared for what happens after high school.”
We are so proud of Devhani and every IDEA graduating senior who matriculated to college this fall!
“It is rare to find schools like IDEA who are this committed to doing whatever it takes to ensure 100% of its graduates matriculates to college,” said Phillip Garza, Chief College & Diversity Officer at IDEA Public Schools. “For the eleventh year, we have hit our acceptance goal, and achieved 99.8% matriculation, nearly 100%, and that is certainly something to celebrate.”
