This week, October 9-13, we are celebrating National School Lunch Week (NSLW)! This is a national annual celebration to raise awareness about the availability of the National School Lunch Program. NSLW is a chance to increase lunch participation and give our community visibility of our healthy school lunch program. Every day we are doing something to promote eating a healthy lunch in a creative way.
The Battle of the Cucumbers
This week, we are having Battle of the Cucumbers, where our students get to vote on their favorite cucumber side—either Cucumber Tomato Salad or the Waved Chili Cucumber. The winning cucumber will be added to our Spring 2018 lunch menu. Throughout the entire week, we will be motivating and educating our students around the importance of a healthy lunch. We believe that healthy lives lead to healthy minds and NSLW is a chance to have our students be excited about healthy foods that can help them succeed in life.
IDEA is more than just a classroom. We support the development of the whole child including emotional and physical health and wellness. A large part of that health and wellness pertains to a nutritious lunch (and breakfast) for every student.
We partner with communities to improve the health and well-being of whole families. Through our Healthy Kids Here program, we are committed to offering well-balanced, farm fresh and nutritious meals to every student and encouraging a healthy and active lifestyle. The program educates the whole IDEA family on health, wellness and nutrition, increases access to healthy food, and hosts 5Ks in all of our regions to get the whole family involved in healthy activities while also raising money for college scholarships. We also have 3 school farms that provided more than 7,000 pounds of vegetables to our cafeterias and communities last year.
