IDEA Receives $1.5 Million grant to fund 21st Century Community Learning Centers

The Texas Education Agency (TEA) has selected IDEA Public Schools as the recipient of a $1.5 million award for its 2018-2019 Texas 21st Century Community Learning Centers.

Programs like the 21st Century Community Learning Centers federal grant program have proven beneficial for offering students a range of after school activities that complement and align with academic programs and improve student performance. Funded by the U.S. Department of Education, these programs offer schools the opportunity to improve student attendance, behavior, and academics, while providing a safe supplemental learning space for students who otherwise would not have such opportunities.

“IDEA is grateful for this generous award and will use the funding to continue to increase the quality of our after-school programs and offer new and innovative educational opportunities to help our students succeed,” said JoAnn Gama, Co-founder, President, & Superintendent of IDEA Public Schools.

More than 13,300 IDEA students have participated in after-school programming through the 21st Century Community Learning Centers initiative in collaborative hands-on programs that range from reading and STEM education to programs involving music and dance such as IDEA’s award-winning mariachi and folklorico groups.

This grant will be used to provide after-school programming for more than 2,000 students across 20 schools in the Rio Grande Valley. The programs will include extracurricular and academic clubs such as studio art, mariachi, theater arts, orchestra, student government, and robotics. All program centers will provide tutoring services in the core subjects of reading, mathematics, science, and social studies in addition to enrichment programs.
