IDEA Holds First District Spelling Bee

This past Saturday, IDEA Public Schools held its first District Spelling Bee.  IDEA students from 12 campuses across the Rio Grande Valley participated in the friendly spelling competition held at IDEA Headquarters in Weslaco, Texas.

“The event was a tremendous success,” said Colleen Stearns, Director of Secondary Humanities at IDEA Public Schools and Spelling Bee coordinator.  “Next year, we plan to expand the Spelling Bee to our other regions as well.”

The event brought together the top 3 spellers from IDEA campuses, ranging from grades 2 through 8.  The winning word?  “Lilac,” spelled by Kassandra Rodriguez, an IDEA Riverview 8th grader and avid reader.  Parents and staff also attended the event to cheer on scholars and celebrate the importance of spelling, learning, and literacy.

Kassandra, the district winner, will advance to the Rio Grande Valley Regional Spelling Bee.  The winner of the Regional Spelling Bee will advance to the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, D. C. in May of 2018.

We wish the best of luck to our awesome IDEA Riverview Rocket, and we’re so proud of every IDEA scholar who participated in the event!
